Have you ever wanted to watch a Polar Bear in it’s natural environment? Explore.org has actual live cams set up all over the world, including in the arctic, to allow us to observe nature up close and personal anytime we wish. Here we can see Polar Bears sleeping, fighting, playing and at this time of the year, hanging around on land waiting for the sea ice to form. During this special time, the bears migrate to Churchill, Manitoba, waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze in order to venture out and hunt their main food source – seals.
Unfortunately, sea ice within the arctic is diminishing, forcing the bears to remain on land and prolong their season of hunting. Polar Bears International display these changes in sea ice formation from the years 1979 – 2012, showing the pulsing trends of the seasons, with an overall reduction as the years go on.
